The Center for Cerebral Palsy at UCLA/LuskinOIC is renowned for excellence in clinical treatment, research and education. We are the premiere interdisciplinary clinic in Los Angeles that evaluates and treats individuals with cerebral palsy throughout the lifespan. Our specialists see patients at 2 convenient locations and perform in-depth evaluations of movement disorders at the Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory. At the Lab, we are able to obtain an in-depth understanding of an affected individuals’ movement patterns – crucial information that informs treatment decisions such as orthopaedic surgery, physical therapy, bracing and medication.

The J. Vernon Luck, Sr., MD Orthopaedic Research Center is located on the Downtown Campus of Orthopaedic Institute for Children, founded as Orthopaedic Hospital in 1911. The Research Center was dedicated to J. Vernon Luck, Sr., M.D., in 1986. The JVL Research Center is internationally recognized for advances in implant performance, including wear, fixation, retrieval analysis, and clinical outcome, as well as fracture, healing and repair.

Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center

It is here that the research activities of Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children and UCLA combine to create the largest collaborative and coordinated orthopaedic research effort in the United States. The partnership enables OIC to greatly expand its musculoskeletal research activities to explore and develop new technologies for the discipline of orthopaedic surgery, in addition to new developments in gene therapy, musculoskeletal oncology, tissue engineering and biomedical engineering.

Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy Treatment

At the LuskinOIC Center for Cerebral Palsy, we diagnose and treat children with all types of cerebral palsy, including:

Treatment Programs as Individual as Your Patients

At LuskinOIC, our interdisciplinary approach creates a treatment plan that makes life easier for children with cerebral palsy and their families. Our new patient appointments include consultations with an orthopedic surgeon, a physiatrist, a physical therapist and an orthotist, as well as a biomechanical assessment of motor impairments. Return appointments offer implementation and follow-up of treatment interventions. We also make referrals to specialists in occupational and speech therapy, psychology, pain management, developmental pediatrics, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, developmental medicine, nutrition, ophthalmology, genetics, urology and osteoporosis.

Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory

LuskinOIC makes it easy for parents to obtain an in-depth evaluation of their child’s movement disorder with referrals to our state-of-the-art Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory. The results of this analysis are reviewed by an expert team including orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and engineers and are incorporated into your patient’s treatment plan.

We Take a Specialized Approach To Recovery

LuskinOIC takes a specialized approach to recovery for children with cerebral palsy, offering comprehensive therapy services. Physical and occupational therapists, specializing in neuromuscular diseases, evaluate and treat patients five days a week. Dr. Rachel Thompson, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, oversees musculoskeletal issues, monitoring development and recommending interventions or surgery when necessary. The facility also provides spasticity management treatments, including neurotoxin injections, intrathecal Baclofen pump insertion, and selective posterior rhizotomy in collaboration with neurosurgery colleagues at UCLA, aiming to enhance movement and reduce unwanted muscle activity in children.
