Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine Clinic at OIC

Your child has been working hard at sports—going to practice every day, eating well, going hard at each game. Then, your child gets injured.

Besides being in physical pain, your child might be disappointed about sitting on the sidelines for a while. If they’re a little older, they might even fear losing an athletic scholarship.

When your child has to take a timeout from his team, there’s another team that’s ready for them—the care providers at OIC’s Center for Sports Medicine. It’s professional sports medicine, just for kids and teens. After all, if the pros get top-class treatment, why shouldn’t your child?

The Center for Sports Medicine at OIC treats all types of pediatric sports injuries, including:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)  & other ligament tears
  • Bone fractures
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Sprains
  • Meniscal tears
  • Hip labral tears
  • Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD)
  • Overuse injuries
  • Shoulder dislocations
  • Leg disorders
  • Arm disorders

What’s Wrong With the Emergency Room?

If your child goes to a general emergency room without care providers who are experts in pediatric orthopaedic injuries, they could risk:

  • An incorrect diagnosis
  • The wrong treatment (e.g., a broken bone set improperly)
  • A slow recovery or an injury that never heals correctly

The Center for Sports Medicine at OIC works closely with our Urgent Care Center, treating thousands of student athletes every year. Football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, rugby, soccer, gymnastics—you name the sport, we’ve seen it.

Patients treated at OIC have access to a variety of specialized services:

  • Tests to precisely diagnose your child’s injury, such as advanced MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • High school athletic Pre-season Sports Clearance Clinic
  • Same-day surgery, if needed
  • Specialty and follow-up appointments with orthopaedic sports medicine experts
  • Virtual care provider consultation exclusively for patients/parents
  • Adolescent pain management clinic
  • Physical therapists with pediatric specialty training

Recovery Is 24/7, and We’ll Be With You the Whole Way

Treatment doesn’t end when your child leaves the clinic. They will be scheduled for follow-up appointments with care providers to evaluate their progress.

If your child receives physical therapy at the center, they’ll also get a comprehensive therapy plan to follow at home. We’ll be there to provide guidance, help keep them motivated, and answer any questions you have along the way.

A Little Pain Now Means Less Pain in the Long Run

Pain and injury can cause stress for kids, even older ones. Medical treatment can leave them feeling uncertain, since they don’t know everything it involves. So honesty is a big part of our treatment approach at the sports medicine clinic.

We’re going to be straight up with your child about this: Pushing through treatment, including physical therapy if needed, can prevent major pain later. It will also help your child heal at an optimum rate, regain coordination, and rebuild weakened muscles.

We’ll help with long-term pain, too. Ask your child’s care provider at the sports medicine clinic about medications, stress reduction techniques, and other forms of pain control.

As the parent, you know your child best, so we look at you as our partner. Be sure to tell us if you think any treatment or therapy is getting too intense for your child. We’ll explain the rationale, reasons, and goals in detail. And if you have any questions along the way, we’re here for you.
